T59 - $10 Keatinge & Ball

from the sixth issue, April 6, 1863

The South Carolina State Capitol, Columbia, is in the center. There is a bust of R. M. T. Hunter, Confederate cabinet member, to the lower right. These bills have a blue ornate reverse with denomination. They were printed on plain and watermarked paper (CSA blockletters with wavy borderline, CSA block, J Whatman 1862, Hodgkinson & Co. Wookey Hole Mill). J Whatman 1862 and Hodkinson & Co. watermarks are very scarce. A very rare variety is known on paper watermarked J. Green & Son 1862.

These bills were overprinted at right with month and issue, April 1863 to February 1864. They were printed with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Series and without series. Over 120 plate letter (A to H), imprint and paper variety combinations exist. If date overprints are included, the number is much higher. 7,420,800 notes were issued.
