T10 - $10 Hoyer & Ludwig

from the second issue, July 25, 1861

The center design of this note is similar to the $5 denomination of this issue but with the shield containing a Confederate flag instead of "5." There is a depiction of Hope with an anchor at lower left. The central design is an old one that appeared on many state bank notes and contained the seal of the state in which the bank was located. The total issue was 170,994. Ink on the $10 note is black. There are over 40 minor varieties of this note representing combinations of different plate letters (A, B and C), "For Treasr." either printed or written, number of stars on flag, bond or plain paper, and differences in the "10" in upper corners. Varieties of this note are very difficult to distinguish.
