Comments:  This is an exampe of the first milled or "pillar" coinage. On the obverse there is a hook shaped die crack at the border of the shield near the stop between D and G in the legend. On the reverse the ribbon on the pillars reads PL and VL for PLUS VLTRA (More Beyond). The 'Mo' is the Mexico City mintmark. The 'F' is the initial of the assayer, Francisco Antonio de la Peña who initialed coins by himself (1762-72) see, Pellicer i Bru, Glosario, p. 40.

Comments:  This is an example of the "portrait" or "modified pillar" design. On the reverse in HISPAN the top of the S somewhat flat and the first stroke of the A is weak. The 'Mo' in the legend indicates mintage in Mexico City. The 'F' and 'M' are the initials of the assayers, Francisco Arance y Cobos (1777-1803) and Mariano Rodríguez (1784-1807),see, Pellicer i Bru, Glosario, pp. 40 and 110.
