    South Carolina Currency


    November 15, 1775

    An emission of £120,000 in bills of credit. The 2s6d through 10s notes are 2 1/2" x 3" while the 15s through 30s are 2 3/8" x 3 5/8" and the £2 through £3, which also have vignettes, are 2 1/2" x 4 3/8". The notes were engraved and printed by James Oliphant in Charleston. Denominations issued were: 2s6d, 5s, 7s6d, 10s, 15s, 20s, 30s, £2, £2 10s and £3.

    Signers: John Berwick, Benjamin Waring, the third is faded.

    Size: not available.

    Comments: Numbered and signed in brown ink. The third daded signature running vertical to the seal appears to be Alexander Gillon. The back is blank.

    Signers: William Heirving, Benjamin Waring, Joseph Verree (or Vivree).

    Size: 62 x 107mm.

    Comments: Numbered and signed in light brown ink. The seal depicts crossed sabers within a crescent moon and the motto PRO LIBERTATE (For Liberty). Completely backed with a stiff paper. Click here to view the blank back.
