1787        Newman 11-X                       Pointed Ray Fugio Cent

Obverse:  [cinquefoil] FUGIO . [cinquefoil]   [cinquefoil] 1787 [cinquefoil]    [in exergue] [ornament] MIND [ornament] YOUR [ornament] / BUSINESS
Reverse:   STATES [cinquefoil] UNITED [cinquefoil]    WE ARE ONE

    Weight:  153.8 g   (9.97 grams)             Diameter:  28.5 mm             Reverse die alignment: 170°

Comments:   The X reverse is easily identified. It is a States United variety with a large space between the A and RE in ARE, putting the R to the left on the N below it. (only reverses M and S1 are similar). Reverse X is unique in that it has a long thin die crack from the rim up through the link between rings 7 and 8 (at 6:00 o'clock). The obverse is more difficult to determine. There are several possibilities however this can be distinguished from obverse 12 in that here the serifs at the top of the U in YOUR are at the same height as the other letters (in 12 the U is lower). Also in obverse 11 on the cinquefoil to the left of FUGIO one of ends points directly to the cross stroke of the F.

The obverse of this coin shows there was a die clash. That is, the obverse and reverse dies struck without a planchet between them, thus causing an impression from one die to be make into the other die. On the obverse of the coin all around the edge, but most prominant at the date area one sees "shield" impressions (called concatenations). These are impressions from the inside of the rings on the reverse die.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.

Reverse:   STATES [cinquefoil] UNITED [cinquefoil]   WE ARE ONE

    Weight:  140.9 g   (9.14 grams)             Diameter:  28.2 mm             Reverse die alignment: 170°

Comments:  The X reverse is easily identified. It is a States United variety with a large space between the A and RE in ARE, putting the R to the left on the N below it. (only reverses M and S1 are similar). Reverse X is unique in that it has a long thin die crack from the rim up through the link between rings 7 and 8 (at 6:00 o'clock). The obverse is more difficult to determine. There are several possibilities however this can be distinguished from obverse 11 in that here the serifs at the top of the U in YOUR are lower than the other letters (in 11 the U is at the same height). Also in obverse 11 on the cinquefoil to the left of FUGIO one of ends points directly to the cross stroke of the F and here it points toward the top stroke of the F. This planchet was clipped near the date. Note there is a small die break (a dot) to the left of the center of the 8 in the date. In this example there are some long planchet voids on the reverse and a few small voids on the obverse near the legend FUGIO.

Obverse:  [cinquefoil] FUGIO . [cinquefoil]   [cinquefoil] 1787 [cinquefoil]   [in exergue] [ornament] MIND [ornament] YOUR [ornament] / [ornament] BUSINESS
Reverse:   STATES [cinquefoil] UNITED [cinquefoil]    WE ARE ONE

    Weight:  149.5 g   (9.69 grams)             Diameter:  28.5 mm             Reverse die alignment: 350°

Comments:   The obverse is the same as in the example above. Note that the serifs at the top of the U in YOUR are lower than the other letters. On the reverse the legend WE ARE ONE was engraved on the die rather than punched and are larger then in the punched varieties. Also, on the reverse bottom of the first stroke of the W points between the A and R below. The letters in ARE are close together as are the letters in ONE with the N and E almost touching. In similar States United reverses either the first stroke of the W pointed to the A or in the word ARE the A and RE are further apart. In this example there is a planchet void from the sun's rays into the sundial and at the link between rings 7 and 8. There are also several small scratches.

Obverse:  [cinquefoil] FUGIO . [cinquefoil]   [cinquefoil] 1787 [cinquefoil]    [in exergue] [ornament] MIND [ornament] YOUR [ornament] / BUSINESS
Reverse:  STATES [eight point star] UNITED [eight point star, rubbed]    WE ARE ONE

    Weight:  146.0 g   (9.46 grams)             Diameter:  28.3 mm             Reverse die alignment: 170°

Comments:  Obverse 15 can most easily be identified by the die crack the extends from the right side of the dial down to the base of the dial at the rim. The Y reverse is the only reverse with an eight pointed star design (rather than the usual cinquefoil) in the STATES UNITED legend. Also it can be identified by the die break inside ring 7. This example also has a void in ring 5.
